Biography

Caleb Vitello was born and raised in Buffalo, New York.[1] He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.[1]

Career

Vitello is a career official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and a member of the Senior Executive Service. Before his appointment as Acting Director, he served as **Assistant Director for the Office of Firearms and Tactical Programs**, where he provided oversight of firearms policy, specialized training, equipment, and tactical guidance for ICE law enforcement personnel.[2]

He previously held senior leadership positions including **Chief of Staff for Enforcement and Removal Operations** and **Director of the National Fugitive Operations Program**.[3]

On **January 20, 2025**, Vitello was appointed **Acting Director of ICE** by the Trump administration, succeeding Patrick Lechleitner.[1] His tenure as acting director lasted until **February 21, 2025**.[1]

In February 2025, the Department of Homeland Security reassigned him from the administrative role, with a DHS spokesperson stating he would continue to oversee enforcement operations, including arrests and deportations, even as new leadership was being named for the agency’s top administrative post.[4][5]
